Consultation Call
Finding the right therapist can be challenging and fit is an important part or the therapeutic relationship. I offer a free consultation to anyone looking to decide if this is a good place to start. In that 15-30 minutes, I will ask a variety of questions to get a brief understanding of what you are looking for and make sure I have the expertise to support you. This is a great time to get a sense of what working with me would look like too. I encourage you to come with your own questions about what to expect.
Initial Appointment
The first session will be approximately 60-90 minutes. This is a comprehensive assessment that will help us begin to figure out what therapy can do to help you. It gives me a chance to begin understanding what made you decide to reach out. I ask a variety of questions about you and your previous experiences. This appointment helps me have a better understanding of what you would like to see differently in your life and what I can do to help you achieve that.
Therapy
Individual sessions are scheduled at your pace, ranging from weekly to bi-weekly. In the beginning, I often recommended every 1-2 weeks so we can both get to know each other and I can learn more about you. Determining when and how to adjust appointments scheduling is a collaborative process. Therapy is an adaptive and dynamic process as are we. You may have a specific goal you’d like to focus on and we will adapt if other things arise. l believe this collaborative approach is critical and I value feedback through this process to support your progress.
Graduation
One goal in therapy is to move towards a place where you no longer “need” me. In other words, to work myself out of a job. From your first appointment, we will work together to figure out what it is you want to see from your work with me. There may be something specific you would like to focus on or we might find there are a few things you want to explore. However, it is normal for people to come to therapy with a specific focus and feel like they can graduate from therapy. It is my pleasure to help someone see their progress, see what they have learned, how they’ve grown and begin to move on with this new knowledge.
Check-Ins
It is also very normal for someone who has graduated from therapy to find themselves in a place where they think about scheduling again. I like to call these kinds of appointments “tune ups.” Sometimes something stressful happens and reminds us of the work we did in therapy. We may find a whole host of emotions and thoughts and it can be helpful to begin scheduling again, even if for a brief time. This does not mean the work you did was a failure. It may not be a regression or a recurrence, it is a remembering and coming back for a few sessions can offer a lot of insight as well as honor the work that was done.
Professional Supervision & consultation
I am licensed and trained to offer supervision to other therapists who are growing and learning in the field. Having an experienced supervisor or professional peer is one way we support each other as professionals and a fantastic way to learn and grow our skills for our clients. I also offer consultation to other professional therapists who are seeking ongoing consultation and support in areas I have expertise in.
